We make God in our own image, then use it as a scapegoat for our own less-than-godly behaviour. Our need to think of ourselves is the good guys paradoxically makes us bad. As Hitchens used to say, you can get seemingly normal people to do the most abhorrent things if you tell them they have a heavenly sanction for it.
