This is so true. Reminds me of the character Cecil in EM Forster's A Room With A View, described with rich irony as "despising humanity on principle, but being sensitive to the individual representatives of it he encountered" (I'm paraphrasing from 20+ years ago).

Point is, we're all kind of like that. Like how the most mild-mannered and kind person can become an inflamed asshole behind the wheel of a car or behind the sickly glow of a screen. When we stop seeing people as people, we open up the door to horrors.
