Thanks for this fascinating analysis. It’s not hard to imagine that ancient soldiers would have suffered from the things they saw and did.

I wonder if there may be a connection between the different attitudes to military service. To the Romans, military service was held in high regard. Soldiers these days aren’t looked at with the same admiration. That’s a consequence of living in a more peaceful society, but I wonder if it makes the trauma of combat harder to process when you can’t even talk about it.
