I take your point, but I would say that Faramir and his men have a religious ritual of looking to the West before eating. Toward Numenor, but also to the land of the Valar, or the gods.

Hobbits are indeed secular. But religions in our world exist in the absence of evidence for gods. When you personally know an angelic being (Gandalf), is that religion? Or just science?
