And I love that you point out that a story is not simply a progression towards goals. David Milch, creator of the TV show Deadwood, once commented that great characters, like great works of art, spin against the way they drive, which is a phrase I think he got from Melville. It's something I try to keep in my mind whenever I'm writing.
