Hmmm. I use the J word sometimes, but I think I use it in the same way Gilbert uses it in the excerpt you shared there.

"She looked like every other junkie the judge had ever seen" - to me, that's giving us an insight into the judge's attitude toward a person. That's how they would see them - just a junkie, instead of a real person.

But you've given me something to think about. I'm always careful how I use the term, but maybe it's not as clear as I think it is...
